Beaver Grows As Masons Watch

VANCOUVER, June 10—Three. Two. Fifty-five.
Those were the significant numbers this evening as Beaver Chapter’s on-line meeting was unexpectedly stopped when a large group of Freemasons “entered” for a surprise visit after the opening ceremony.
The surprise was organised by Dad Jay Quinones, Chev., and Mr. Dwayne Grant of Joppa Lodge No. 112 of White Rock.
There were fifty-five attendees, including the Grand Master of Freemasons in B.C. and Yukon, Mr. Don Mackenzie; the Deputy Grand Master, Mr. Ken Overy; the Senior Grand Warden, Mr. Art Smith; and the Grand Secretary, Mr. George Moore.
Several Senior DeMolays who are Masons were also present, including Bro. Al Strang, PMC of Point Grey Chapter in Vancouver and the Master of St. James Lodge No. 80 in White Rock.
A variety of toasts took place throughout the evening, a practice common in Freemasonry but not in DeMolay. One toast involved firing a miniature cannon.
The three newest members of the Chapter were invested as officers, with Bro. Huy Lam as Junior Councillor; Bro. Adrian Mercado as Marshall and Bro. Sebastian Petines as Chaplain. The ceremony was conducted by Dad Jim Bennie, PMC, Chev., as Installing Officer and Dad Dwayne Berto, PMC, Chev., as Installing Marshall.

Two young men were inducted as Squires of the Auntie Grace Dawkins Manor attached to Beaver Chapter by Dad Bennie. The Manor takes its name from one of the most beloved supporters of the Order of DeMolay and Job’s Daughters in Burnaby and East Vancouver (and, later, provincially) for decades. She was elected Beaver Chapter’s Sweetheart For Life in the early 1990s.
The two Squires are expected to become DeMolays in the fall after they turn 12.
Mr. Grant followed with “The Address to the Brethren,” part of the Masonic installation ceremony written in Ontario in the late 19th Century, which includes a portion describing “The Ideal of a Freemason.” He performed the ritual from inside the White Rock Masonic Temple, which had been the home of the late Peace Arch Chapter for almost 30 years.
A number of members of Mr. Grant’s lodge were strong Advisors of the Order of DeMolay, including Dads Phil Hayes, Kirk Morrow, Murray Boyle, Larry Parent, Bill Woodman and the late, respected Dad Gary Russell. Dad Parent, Chapter Dad of Surrey’s Royal Kwantlen Chapter in 1972, and a recipient of the DeMolay Cross of Honour, was present at the meeting and reminisced a bit.
The Master Councillor, Bro. Joshua Brigole, despite being new in office and having comparatively little DeMolay experience, maintained his composure and expressed his delight on several occasions with the Masonic support.
Miss Maia Fairbairn, Beaver Chapter Sweetheart, admitted the meeting gave her some insight into some of the things that go on behind closed doors at DeMolay meetings. While the Squire Induction ceremony used in B.C. is not public, it contains nothing considered secret.
Bro. Logan Drew, Provincial Master Councillor, commented on the recent growth in B.C.’s oldest Chapter and pledged his support and that of his officers.
Dad Nick Biss, Executive Officer for B.C. and Yukon, expressed the hope that this event would encourage Masonic support for DeMolay in locations where there are no longer chapters, hopefully creating yet another significant number for the Order.
