Legion of Honour Conferred Via Zoom

VANCOUVER, June 25—Three Masonic Past Grand Masters who are Senior DeMolays assisted in the conferral  Friday of the DeMolay Legion of Honour on the Reverend Rod MacKinnon, a 60-year member of the Order.

Dad MacKinnon was born in Vancouver to Leonard and Annie (Cosh) MacKinnon. He was 15 when he joined Beaver Chapter on January 23, 1961. He received the DeMolay Degree on February 27, 1961 and was installed as Master Councillor in summer 1963. He was noted in his day for performing the Flower Talk at the Chapter’s installations.

The ceremony was conducted as part of a Zoom meeting of Lodge Southern Cross No. 44, which is the lodge of Dad MacKinnon, his father—a Past Chapter Dad of Beaver Chapter—and his uncle Sam Cosh. He was initiated on April 22, 1966; received his Second Degree on September 23, 1966; his Third Degree on October 27, 1966 and installed as Worshipful Master on September 8, 1978.

The Past Grand Masters taking part were M.W. Bro. Doug Collins, LOH and a founding member of Skeena Chapter in Prince Rupert as Commander in the West, M.W. Bro. J. Alan Cross, LOH and a PMC of Point Grey Chapter in Vancouver and M.W. Bro. Ron Yates, LOH and a PMC of Mount Cheam Chapter in Chilliwack.

Another Past Grand Master, M.W. Bro. Barry Burch, HLOH, served as Grand Marshal.

The current Grand Master in British Columbia and Yukon, M.W. Bro. Don MacKenzie, also attended with the Deputy Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Ken Overy.

The Grand Commander for the ceremony was the Worshipful Master of Lodge Southern Cross, Dad Jim Bennie, LOH and Past Executive Officer for B.C. and Yukon.

The other officers were Chris Nietzel, PMC and Chev. of Golden Ears Chapter and a member of Lodge Southern Cross as Commander in the South; Dad Ken Sewell, LOH of Point Grey Chapter and Past Provincial Master Councillor as Grand Chaplain and Grand Herald and Dad Bill Price, PMC and Chev., who was Senior Councillor of Beaver Chapter when Dad MacKinnon was Master Councillor.

Performing the Preceptor ritual were Bros. Logan Drew, Provincial M.C.; River Peatman, Parliament Speaker; Wilson McLean; Joey Gagnon; Eric Einarson, Past Jurisdictional M.C. of Alberta; and Joshua Brigole, the current Master Councillor of Beaver Chapter, who attended with his other two Councillors. Powerpoint slides of the various flowers were displayed as the ritual was recited, as well as the certificate, ring, red cordon and medallion.

Dad MacKinnon said he was humbled by the ceremony and would attempt to live up to the vow he took. Dad MacKinnon has been involved in the ministry through the United Church for a number of decades, most recently in Agassiz. He is a graduate of Killarney Secondary School and the University of British Columbia.

One of the attendees was Dad Jim Smyth of Seattle, an honorary member of Lodge Southern Cross, who received the Legion of Honour in Washington state roughly 20 years ago. He was initiated into DeMolay in 1947.

This was the first time the honour was conferred in Canada via Zoom and, with COVID conditions improving, could likely be the last.
